Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, Searching For The Hows And Whys Album Review

Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly

Searching For The Hows And Whys

Album Review

With his debut album ‘The Chronicles Of A Bohemian Teenager’, the artist otherwise known as Sam Duckworth garnered critical acclaim and relative commercial success. Fans can catch him at several festivals across the summer, including T In The Park, Wireless and Bestival.

Having got himself noticed with his first record, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly uses this album to truly express himself but lyrically and musically. Of course there are the expected acoustic tracks (‘Postcards From Catalunya’ and ‘Moving Forward’ feature beautiful riffs), but horns are used effectively on the tale of puppy love that is ‘Young And Lovestruck’ and Prodigy-esque beats are mixed with strings for ‘Waiting For The Monster To Drown’. Perhaps most successful is the Latin-flavoured ‘The Children Are (The Consumers) Of The Future’, which as the title suggests is an attack on capitalism and consumer culture.

Where Duckworth stands apart from many of his peers is that he is a fantastic writer of lyrics and this is cemented on this record. The duet with Kate Nash 'Better Things’, finely details the darker side to fame and groupies, but if this seems small-minded to anyone, a listen to ‘I Could Build You A Tower’ should convince you he is capable of much more. Introduced by news clips, it tackles the subjects of recent wars, terrorism and school massacres, before questioning the human nature that allows these atrocities to happen. The result is a stunning song which truly marks this artist to be someone of great potential and musicianship.

Sharpton Praises Nas For Dropping Controversial Album Title

Rapper NAS' decision not to call his new album N**GER has been praised by civil rights activist REVEREND AL SHARPTON.
The 34-year-old New York native wanted to use the title to make a political statement about the hypocrisy in hip-hop.
But criticism from Def Jam record executives and fear of a decline in sales persuaded him to pull the title on Monday (19May08), just six weeks before the album hits stores on 1 July (08).
And Sharpton is calling the rapper's decision a "partial victory" for racial-equality activists.
He says, "The record companies have to consider the downside of using it, business-wise. That would not have happened if we hadn't protested.
"I have a lot of respect for Nas. I liked what he said about (police shooting victim) Sean Bell. We have a fundamental disagreement on this. He can rap against me. I'll preach against them. We're still friends."
But Nas insists the album's original title will still resonate with his fans.
He says, "The streets have been waiting for this for a long time. The people will always know what the real title of this album is and what to call it."

AL GREEN

Lay It Down (Blue Note): A-

Memphis soul singer Al Green launched a late-career comeback in 2003 when he made his first album for Blue Note with Willie Mitchell, the producer responsible for every one of Green’s classic hits. In 2005 the old partners were back again on Green’s second tasty Blue Note release. Now Green risks a switch to a new team led by Roots drummer Ahmir ?uestlove Thompson and boasting youthful supporting guests including Anthony Hamilton, John Legend and Corinne Bailey Rae. Rather than stuff Green into a hip-hop suit, ?uestlove and company conjure a straight-out-of-the-’70s Memphis sound that out-Mitchells Mitchell. With its delicious grooves, delectable background vocals and horn parts (played by the Amy Winehouse/Sharon Jones-approved Dap-Kings), and Green crooning, cooing and crowing in inspired form, “Lay It Down” exceeds every expectation.
